Raut’s Abusive Swipe At ‘Rebels’ Triggers Fresh Row

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP and senior leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday triggered a fresh political controversy after launching a sharp attack on party leaders who have rebelled against the organisation. Addressing reporters at a press conference, Mr. Raut reportedly used abusive language while referring to suspected rebel MPs and MLAs, drawing criticism from political opponents as well as sections within the political spectrum. During the interaction, he also urged television channels and media outlets not to censor or mute his remarks, insisting they be broadcast in their original form.

The remarks came after reports surfaced that Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was attempting to engineer another split in the Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray by allegedly poaching at least six of the party’s nine Lok Sabha MPs. In response, Mr. Raut said, “The party has given everything to us. Balasaheb Thackeray has cared for us like children. Uddhav Thackeray has loved us like brothers. Those who are leaving are bho$@#%&.”

Using an expletive while referring to the rebel leaders, adding, “Don’t cut it. These people are dishonest. The dishonesty is in their blood.”

Defending his abusive remarks at the press conference, Mr. Raut said he had not said anything wrong, as such expressions are commonly used in Maharashtra and the Marathi language. He clarified that he had not made any such remarks in Parliament.

Mr. Raut further said “Maharashtra” had remained silent in 2022 after Mr. Shinde’s rebellion, but it will not tolerate “that nonsense” this time. “There will be major raadaa (clashes) if anyone betrays. Maharashtra will not spare gaddars this time,” he said in a veiled threat to rebel MPs.

Reacting to the controversy, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Lok Sabha MP Anil Desai defended Mr. Raut, saying the remark was slang and not directed at any individual. “Sanjay Raut is an emotional person who has worked for over 50 years in social and political life,” Mr. Desai said.

However, Maharashtra minister and Shiv Sena leader from the Shinde faction, Sanjay Shirsat, condemned the remarks, stating that such language was inappropriate. “The MPs represent their constituencies and have been serving for many years. The way he insulted and abused them is not appropriate,” Mr. Shirsat said.

Maharashtra BJP chief spokesperson Navnath Ban also criticised Mr. Raut, alleging that he frequently uses inappropriate language in public discourse. “Sanjay Raut has developed a habit of using below-the-belt language. His frustration is clearly visible. It appears he needs mental treatment,” Mr. Ban said, adding that arrangements for his treatment could be made if required.
