Priyanka Gandhi's Aide Urged Me To Return To Cong

I never telephoned Mrs Vadra. I don't need to do it also - MLA Humayun Kabir

BERHAMPORE: Controversial Bharatpur Trinamul Congress MLA Humayun Kabir on Friday triggered a speculation of his fresh defection claiming that one of aides of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra requested him to return to his previous party.

Mr Kabir claimed, "I never telephoned Mrs Vadra. I don't need to do it also. It was her messenger who had telephoned me. Any political leader can contact another for own party's interest. I am still in TMC but will not share my secret plan,” without divulging details.

Mr Kabir had won as a Congress MLA in 2011 but defected to TMC in 2012 and was defeated in the Assembly by poll in 2013. He later joined BJP and fought from Murshidabad Lok Sabha seat in 2019 and lost before returning to Congress again. In 2021, he rejoined TMC and became an MLA from Bharatpur in Murshidabad.

Mr Kabir also expressed his unhappiness with the local TMC leaders at his assembly constituency. Mr Kabir said, "My only demand is that Bharatpur block I and II presidents should be removed. Our party MP and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had assured me of that. But they are yet to be removed. They may oppose our party in the next Assembly Election.”

The TMC MLA already wished to contest the polls from Rejinagar seat, his old turf, next time but sources revealed that his party leadership has not accepted his wish prompting him to look for a safe seat with a vast Muslim vote bank.
