Naveen Patnaik Re-elected BJD President For Ninth Term; Blames 2024 Poll Loss On BJP’s ‘False Narrative’
Expressing gratitude to the people of Odisha, Patnaik said, “From 2000 to 2024, the people have blessed us with the opportunity to serve. This is more than a political mandate—it’s a reflection of their trust in our governance”

Bhubaneswar: Naveen Patnaik was re-elected as president of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for a record ninth consecutive term on Saturday. The former Odisha Chief Minister, who has helmed the regional party since its formation in 1997, was the sole nominee for the post.
Expressing gratitude to the people of Odisha, Patnaik said, “From 2000 to 2024, the people have blessed us with the opportunity to serve. This is more than a political mandate—it’s a reflection of their trust in our governance.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to Odisha’s development, pride, and dignity, emphasising that the BJD’s mission transcends electoral victories.
“Whether in power or not, our dedication to public service remains. Our workers are our real strength, and our disciplined, grassroots cadre makes us resilient,” he said.
Patnaik also pointed to the party’s recent electoral setback, attributing the loss of a few key seats in 2024 to what he termed “false narratives” propagated during the campaign. He acknowledged the need to bolster the party’s communication, particularly on social media, to counter misinformation and maintain direct engagement with the public.
“The BJD will always stand united for Odisha’s interests. Our journey is not just about forming governments—it is about preserving the self-respect and aspirations of our people,” he stated.
Patnaik’s re-election triggered mixed reactions across the political spectrum. While leaders and well-wishers extended congratulations, Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal offered a more critical tone alongside his best wishes.
“I congratulate Naveen Babu and hope he is ready for the challenges ahead—both political and administrative,” Samal told reporters shortly after the announcement.
He went on to criticise the previous BJD government, reiterating the BJP’s accusations of mismanagement and lack of transparency. “Our concerns were never just political rhetoric—they were grounded in reality. The misuse of central funds during Patnaik’s regime remains unaddressed. To date, he hasn’t provided a single convincing explanation,” Samal alleged.
Samal also cited recent electoral trends as evidence of a shifting political landscape in Odisha. “People are beginning to see through the façade. The BJP made significant gains in both vote share and public trust. Voters are demanding accountability and a break from the status quo,” he said.
Despite the sharp critique, Samal maintained that the BJP respects democratic processes and values the role of a strong opposition. “Democracy thrives on accountability. The people of Odisha deserve a government that listens, acts, and evolves,” he concluded.
