New Delhi: The ‘Public Impeachment’ of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar Gupta, organised by the members of the opposition INDIA Bloc is underway at the residence of Rajya Sabha Opposition Leader Mallikarjun Kharge at 10 Rajaji Marg in New Delhi, on October 31, Saturday.
This is a symbolic protest demonstration against the CEC and the Union Government as part of the opposition’s Mock Parliament initiative.
The opposition parties are conducting the symbolic impeachment of the CEC, who is facing allegations of manipulating India’s voter rolls and illegal mass deletions of voters in the country.
At the event, Mallikarjun Kharge read the 'charges' against CEC Gyanesh Kumar said that the CEC is guilty of centralising control of electoral rolls. Karge said that the INDIA Bloc unanimously demand CEC should be removed, SIR should be stopped and the 2023 law (on appointment of CEC) be changed. Threat to democracy will increase if people like CEC Gyanesh Kumar continue on constitutional post, Kharge added.
Senior Congress leader and former Former Speaker of the Lok Sabha Meira Kumar said that the people whose names were removed from electoral roll also share INDIA bloc’s views.
