Trade Deal With US Will Hurt Indian Farmers : Congress president Kharge
Govt wants to destroy Indian Agri sector; the new US-India deal will be pumping cash into rural America : Mallikarjun Kharge

Congress party president Mallikarjun Kharge said it is an insult to Indian Parliament that parliamentarians got to know about the deal when it was in session from US President Donald Trump and not the government.
New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday questioned the timing and manner of the announcement of the Indo-US trade deal, alleging that the government had bypassed Parliament by making the disclosure while the House was in session and without adequate consultation.
Speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex, Kharge asked whether India had compromised its national interests under “pressure” from the United States. He said trade agreements with major economic and strategic implications should be debated in Parliament before being announced or finalised.
“When Parliament is in session, such major decisions should first be brought before the House,” Kharge said. “Why was this trade deal announced outside Parliament? Was there any pressure from the United States, and has India compromised in any manner?” he asked.
He said trade agreements directly affect farmers, small and medium enterprises, domestic industry and employment, making parliamentary scrutiny essential. Kharge accused the government of diminishing the role of Parliament and treating it as a “rubber stamp” rather than the principal forum for democratic accountability.
The Congress president also alleged a growing trend of key policy decisions being communicated through official statements and media briefings instead of structured discussion in the legislature, which he said undermined parliamentary democracy.
The Congress demanded that the government place the full details of the Indo-US trade agreement before Parliament, including any concessions made by India and safeguards provided for domestic interests, and sought a comprehensive debate on its impact on sensitive sectors.
