Fadnavis slammed Rahul over his Nandigram candidate arrest comments
Nagpur: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his "political revenge" and "murder of democracy" comments aimed at the BJP following the arrest of the opposition party's candidate in the Nandigram bypoll in West Bengal. Asking Gandhi a series of questions connected to the arrest of Congress candidate Milan Pradhan, the CM took a swipe saying the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha "must examine himself first".
According to WB police, Pradhan was arrested in connection with at least four cases related to rioting, murder and criminal intimidation during the 2007 anti-land acquisition movement in Nandigram. Police have said the arrest, coming ahead of the October 6 Nandigram bypoll, was linked to a pending warrant.
"The arrest of Congress candidate Milan Pradhan for the Nandigram by-election is no coincidence -- it is political revenge, the murder of democracy," Gandhi had said in an X post on Friday.
Asked about the post, Fadnavis said, "I want to ask Rahul Gandhi ji on what charges was your candidate arrested? Does he support the charges for which he was arrested? Should an offender be let off for this kind of crime just because he is a Congress leader? Can this thing happen in this country? That's why I think he (Gandhi) should examine himself first," he said.
Pradhan, who has been named in more than 12 cases over the Nandigram land movement, was picked up from a hotel in Chandipur in Purba Medinipur district in the BJP-ruled eastern state.
