PMK wants local body polls before March
Chennai: PMK on Friday demanded that the local body polls be held before March next year after delimitation of the local bodies as per the 2011 census.
A resolution to this effect was adopted at the party’s general council meeting held at Thailapuram in Tindivanam. The resolution said that Madras High Court on October 4 directed the state election commission to not to hold the election before carrying out delimitations of the wards in the local bodies as per the 2011 census. Though the court directed the commission to hold the polls in December after completing the delimitation process, the state government did not seem to be bothered about it, it said, adding that with the tenure of the special officers appointed to the local bodies ends in April next year, the elections to the delimited wards in the local bodies should be held before March.
The party also demanded the state government to implement complete prohibition before the Tamil New year. It condemned the government for its failure for not implementing the Supreme Court order directing closure of liquor shops in the highways and removing hoardings directing the shops. The party also adopted resolutions seeking immediate constitution of the Cauvery Management Board and conduct of Jallikattu during pongal.
