M Swaraj-CPI spat: Kodiyeri Balakrishnan steps in

There were no issues between them either at the national or state level.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has intervened in the ugly spat between Mr M. Swaraj, MLA, and the CPI. Mr Balakrishnan said attempts were being made by certain quarters to blow local issues out of proportion to suggest that there are serious differences between the two Left parties. “The CPM and the CPI are working unitedly. Even the massive victory secured by the LDF in the recent Assembly polls was a result of this unity. Under the present circumstances, this unity needs to be strengthened further,” he said in a Facebook post.

Mr Kodiyeri said it would not be difficult for one to understand why certain quarters were deliberately trying to propagate that there were differences. However, such attempts would not succeed. He said that cordial relations existed between the two parties and that all differences can be discussed and settled in the House. There was no need to sort out issues publicly.

It was after the split in the communist party in 1964 that the Left parties realised that the differences were not helpful for the growth of communist movement in the country. “The CPI admitted its mistake of supporting Emergency and came together for wider Left unity. We are now working together,” he said. There were no issues between them either at the national or state level.

“By pointing to certain local issues, some sections were trying to create an impression that there are serious differences between us. But the CPM is not ready to buy that theory. We will work with more unity in future,” he said. Meanwhile, Mr Swaraj, against whom an article published in the CPI mouthpiece ‘Janayugam’ on Monday had made certain offensive remarks, said that he had been targeted unnecessarily.

He said the derogatory references made against him in the article had reflected the culture and politics of the author. “I have faced similar derogatory and abusive language from the Sangh Parivar often,” he added. Now with Mr Kodiyeri himself stepping in to maintain a truce, Mr Swaraj and Ernakulam CPI leaders are likely to end their ongoing spat.
