Congress offers 25 seats to women in Assembly

Ms Ramani said that only the Congress was working for the development and empowerment of women.

Vijayawada: The Congress would given 25 Assembly seats to women in the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state, APCC president N. Raghuveera Reddy said on Wednesday.

The announcement, which comes on the back of Congress president Rahul Gandhi promising 33 per cent women’s reservations in legislature, was made at an event where Ms P. Ramani Kumari assumed charge as president of the Mahila Congress.

Speaking during the programme at the State Congress office at Andhra Ratna Bhavan at Vijayawada, Mr Raghuveera Reddy announced that Mr Gandhi had promised providing Rs 5 lakh worth Arogysri medical cover and Rs 2 lakh loan waiver to women.

He said women could change society and the country and appealed to them to work with dedication to secure a Congress victory. He said only the Congress could provide protection and security to women in society.

Ms Ramani said that only the Congress was working for the development and empowerment of women. She stated that the Mahila Congress leaders would conduct awareness programmes among women for one month to strengthen the party.

APCC vice-president N. Tulasi Reddy said the Congress had made Indira Gandhi Prime Minister, Ms Prathiba Patil president, Ms Meira Kumar Lok Sabha Speaker and Ms Girija Vyas and Ms Ambica Soni as Union ministers.

He claimed that many women leaders had got top places in the previous Congress governments and party organisation in AP. AP Women’s Congress former president Sunkara Padmasri, state women incharge M. Sudha, former Union minister J.D. Seelam and other leaders addressed the meeting.
