Adivasis show community first

In very few gram panchayats, more than three members among the Adivasis had contested in the elections for sarpanch posts in the tribal areas.

Adilabad: Adivasis again showed unity in the villages by unanimously electing their sarpanches and ward members in most of the gram panchayats in the elections unlike in the plain areas in old Adilabad district.

In very few gram panchayats, more than three members among the Adivasis had contested in the elections for sarpanch posts in the tribal areas.

Unanimously electing sarpanches and ward members shows their strict adherence to their traditional community rules and resolving the problems amicably in their village itself without approaching police stations.

However, most of the Adivasis have been elected independently without having affiliation to any party. Now major political parties are attracting them into their parties.

TRS is much ahead of other parties in luring the elected Sarpaches into its fold. It is to be seen how the elected Sarpanches and ward members will respond to the requests.

News is making the rounds in political circles that party working president K.T. Ramarao is focusing on luring the sarpanches and ward members to strengthen the party at the grassroots in the wake of the Lok Sabha elections.

The third phase of gram panchayat elections went off peacefully in the old Adilabad district.

However, police made elaborate security arrangements for sarpanch elections in the interior areas to avoid untoward incidents.

Many candidates supported by the Congress party won as sarpanches in areas where the Congress party still has a hold in Kumarambheem and Asifabad, Nirmal and Mancherial districts. Congress party candidates were elected as Sarpanches in good numbers in Sirpur (ST), Asifabad and Mancherial and Nirmal Assembly constituencies.

In Karimnagar, Ramagudam commissioner Y. Satyanarayana inspected a few GPs and monitored security arrangements. Meanwhile, Adilabad

collector Divya Devarajan and superintendent of police Vishnu S. Warrior inspected some polling booths and monitored the situation.
