Chennai: About 215 candidates including 12 women have filed their nominations for the May 19 by-election to the four Assembly constituencies of Sulur, Aravakurichi, Thiruparankundram and Ottapidaram in the State.
AIADMK candidates: V. P. Kandasamy filed his papers for Sulur (in Coimbatore district), V.V. Senthil Nathan for Aravakurichi (Karur), S. Muniyandi for Tiruparankundram (Madurai) and P. Mohan for Ottapidaram (Thoothukudi) besides Kamal Haasan's MNM candidates: G. Mayilsami (Sulur), S. Mohanraj (Aravakurichi), P. Sakthivel (Thiruparankundram) and M. Gandhi of Valarum Thamizhagam party, an ally of MNM, filed his nomination for the Ottapidaram (R) seat, on the last day of filing nominations on Monday.
The nominations would be taken up for scrutiny on April 30 and the last date of withdrawal will be on May 2.
The bypolls to these four Assembly constituencies will be held on May 19, which is the last phase of polling in the Lok Sabha election. These apart, by-election has been held for 18 Assembly seats, along with the Lok Sabha election on April 18.
Woman tahsildar entered storage room to complete work: CEO
The woman tahsildar, Sampoornam, who had allegedly breached the security at a counting centre in Madurai, on May 20, had gone to the 'documents room' to complete the unfinished work, Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo has said.
Accompanied by an additional returning officer, the tahsildar had entered the room only to check the papers pertaining to Madurai West Assembly constituency on April 18 and not the strong room where the EVMs and VVPATs have been kept, it was clarified.
S. Nagarajan who had been transferred as collector of Madurai district following the controversial breach of security by the polling officials, had submitted a detailed report on the incident to the CEO on Monday.
