Cheap power: D K Shivakumar challenges B S Yeddyurappa

Bengaluru: Hitting back at BJP State President Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa for alleging that the state was purchasing power at a higher price, Energy Minister Mr D.K. Shivakumar asked Mr Yeddyurappa to help the state get power at a lower price.

In a letter to Mr Yeddyurappa, Mr Shivakumar said the State was ready to purchase power at a cheaper price, if Mr Yeddyurappa could mediate between the state and the Centre. “I have noticed your statement that the state government is purchasing power at Rs 4 per unit from private players like JSW and UPCL, though the Centre is ready to supply at Rs 2.5 per unit. However, during discussion with the state government, the Centre has offered a price above Rs 4 per unit. If the Centre was ready to supply power at Rs 2.5 per unit, which the state government is not aware of, you could take the initiative to help the state. We will fix an appointment at your convenience and cancel the power purchase agreement with private parties,'' Mr Shivakumar said.

“The State would also need a corridor to draw power from the central grid. If you can get the state power at Rs 2.5 per unit from the Centre or other sources, we are ready to come for a meeting at any given point of time,'' Mr Shivakumar added.
