Will Karnataka contest BS Yeddyurappa's acquittal?

Decision after talks with legal eagles and discussion in Cabinet meeting.

Bengaluru: The state government is verifying whether it could question the acquittal of state BJP president B.S. Yeddyurappa by a special CBI court in a case of corruption, law minister T.B. Jayachandra said on Friday.

He told the media here it was not clear whether the state or Union government could appeal against the order of the Special CBI court.

Once legal experts present their views on this question, the state government would take an appropriate decision after an elaborate discussion in the cabinet, he added.

Meanwhile, Congress MLC Mr V.S. Ugrappa alleged that the CBI was misused during prosecution of Mr Yeddyurappa, resulting in his acquittal.

“Dereliction of duty on the part of CBI officials is evident in the judgment. On acquittal, Mr Yeddyurappa was behaving like Sathya Harishchandra. In that case, let him explain to the people as to why Jindal Steel Works made a donation to Prerana Trust,” he added.

He wondered why JSW paid Rs 20 crores to acquire a piece of land which was purchased by Mr Yeddyurappa’s kin for Rs 20 lakhs an acre. “Former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has pointed at where Rs two crores seized in Vidhana Soudha premises was going to. If a proper investigation is carrier out in the case of seizure of cash, the truth could be unearthed,” he added.

Reinvigorated BSY issues notice to rivals

Two days after his acquittal by a CBI court, state BJP president B.S. Yeddyurappa has evidently started flexing his muscles with the state disciplinary action committee, headed by Shankarappa, taking a decision to serve show-cause notices on two leaders who recently embarrassed the Lingayat strongman.

Sources in the party said Tumakuru legislator and former minister, M. Shivanna, and M.D. Nandeesh were served show cause notices, seeking an explanation on charges that they had resorted to anti-party activities. These leaders had reportedly issued statements against Mr Yeddyurappa for over a month. Besides, they also held meetings against Mr Yeddyurappa in Tumakuru, sources added.

Sources said the party would take action after the disciplinary action committee scrutinizes their responses, adding that Mr Shivanna was picked as an ideal example as he hails from Lingayat community. And, initiating action against him would not do cause much damage to the party because Mr Yeddyurappa was the tallest leader among Lingayats, sources added.

Meanwhile, Union minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda on Friday criticized Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC president Dr. G.Parameshwar for commenting on the CBI special court’s order of acquittal of state BJP president B. S. Yeddyurappa.

Mr. Sadananda Gowda told the media these leaders had no respect for the judiciary. Mr Siddaramaiah’s statement mirrors the fact that he no respect for judicial orders.

Congratulating Mr Yeddyurappa for emerging clean in the Prerana Trust case, Mr. Sadananda Gowda said the court verdict would not only boost the image of Mr Yeddyurappa but also of the party. It would also help the party step up its attack against the ruling Congress, he added.

The minister said from the beginning, the court order had vindicated the stand of the party that Mr Yeddyurappa was falsely implicated in the case, and was a clean leader.
