E-bills for GST: Madras HC bench notice to PMO

The petitioner alleged that there were a lot of irregularities and confusion in levy and collection of taxes on the inter-state transit of goods.

Madurai: The Madurai bench of the Madras High court on Monday issued notice to principal secretary in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on a petition seeking to direct all traders to use E-way bills in making GST payments of above Rs 5,000.

A division bench comprising Justices K K Sasidharan and G R Swaminathan issued this notice after one K K Ramesh from Madurai in his PIL alleged that the commercial establishments were cheating the government in making GST payments.

The petitioner alleged that there were a lot of irregularities and confusion in levy and collection of taxes on the inter-state transit of goods. At present taxes are levied in various rates ranging from 5 per cent to 28 per cent.

"The traders can cheat the government in many ways," charged Ramesh. Hence, introduction of E-way bill would help the government to prevent the traders from cheating the public and to pay the GST properly to the authorities.

The court also issued notice to the principal secretary, Ministry of Finance and posted the next hearing to September 18.
