‘Government acted on water crisis after DMK raised voice’
CHENNAI: The opposition DMK has claimed that the state government acted on the water crisis prevailing in Tamil Nadu only after the party raised its voice.
DMK president M. K. Stalin who called on Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal on Friday and submitted a memorandum to discuss nine issues during the budget session of the TN Assembly, including One Nation, One Ration Card issue and student loans, said the AIADMK-led government initiated measures to tackle the water crisis after his party raised the voice.
Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Stalin said his party legislators would raise the issue in the House. “Women were forced to search for water and they had to even wait with empty pots for long hours to get water. AIADMK has not given importance to tackling the water crisis. The government acted on it after we raised the issue,” Stalin said.
On the state government's plan to establish a fourth desalination plant for Chennai by 2024, Stalin said it was the DMK, which had initially proposed the project.
After laying the foundation stone for the third desalination plant at Nemmeli for an estimated cost of Rs 1,259 crore, on Thursday, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palanisamy informed the government would establish a 400 MLD desalination plant at Perur to meet the drinking water requirement of Chennai.
