Karunanidhi asks EC to conduct polls in fair manner

DMK was submitting petitions everyday to the EC asking the officials why the polls to Aravakurichi and Thanjavur had not been held so far.

Chennai: DMK chief M. Karunanidhi on Saturday asked the Election Commission to conduct the elections to Aravakurichi and Thanjavur in a fair and democratic manner.

He claimed that the EC’s announcement had made it clear that the ruling party tried to buy votes. Now, it is also clear that the elections to the two seats would be held in a different date to be declared by the EC.

Karunanidhi said the DMK would field candidates in both the constituencies and added that the polls would be an opportunity for the EC to know about the attempts of the ruling party to buy votes through cash, other irregularities and misappropriation of government machinery.

The DMK was submitting petitions everyday to the EC asking the officials why the polls to Aravakurichi and Thanjavur had not been held so far. The party had also approached the Madras High Court on the issue and the officials were giving a reply everyday that the polls would be held soon. But, the elections had been totally postponed now, he added.
