Cabinet rejig likely on May 19 after Assembly poll results

Fate of Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry will be decided on the same day.

New Delhi: A Cabinet reshuffle, which has been pending for a while now, is likely to take place on or around 19 May, according to reports. The polls results of Assembly Elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry will be announced on the same day.

As reported in The Indian Express, Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not want to delay the reshuffle any further as he wants his new team to commence work immediately. A few new faces is likely to be seen and portfolios of some ministers may be interchanged.

As the Bharatiya Janata Party completes two years in power on May 26, the Cabinet reshuffle is on the agenda. According to a report, the government also plans to demonstrate steps taken regarding unearthing of black money. It is also expected that the reshuffle will factor the assembly elections next year in the key states of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

Of the poll bound states, Assam is the only state where the party hopes to seize power. The BJP, which has promoted Sports and Youth affairs Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will have to find a replacement if the party lives up to its expectations in the Assembly polls.

There is hardly any indication of the state’s political scenario having changed significantly in any way since 2014, and the BJP still remains much more popular than other political parties.

That said, there has been some decline in the BJP’s popularity on account of the Narendra Modi government’s failure to act on its poll promises.

The ongoing session of Parliament is scheduled to end on 13 May.
