CPI gains irk Kannur CPM

The meeting will elect the new district committee on Monday.

Kannur: On the second day of the CPM district conference here, the state leadership was under fire for its failure to rein in CPI, a smaller entity of the LDF. Many of the delegates who spoke at the conference said that though the CPM was the front leader on many issues, the CPI scored, according to sources.

Many delegates also expressed protest over the manner the party leadership dealt with district secretary P. Jayarajan, raising allegations against him of self-promotion. At a time when party meetings were round the corner, the timing of his censure was wrong and the way it leaked out to media amounted to cheating, delegates said.

The meeting will elect the new district committee on Monday. Though the state leadership is unhappy with the way Jayarajan led the party in Kannur, a majority of delegates were supportive of Jayarajan. Political observers feel that at this point it would be tough for the party to replace Jayarajan, even by pacifying him with a promotion to state secretariat.

All prominent leaders from Kannur including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan are staying at the party conference, giving explanations for the issues raised by cadres and also interacting with the delegates during the interval.
