EC in no mood to conduct local bodies election

M Subramanian said that state election commission behaves like a government department and has been finding tactical reasons to delay the polls

Chennai: After being decimated in the RK Nagar bypoll the ruling AIADMK is likely to postpone the local bodies poll for some more time and the state election commission is also in no mood to conduct the civic polls at least till March, said a highly placed informed official.

While the matter is pending before Supreme Court there is no bar to the state election commission to announce the poll schedule, but till now works have not been commenced to prepare for the civic polls.

With state gearing up for the assembly session in January and the local administration ministry is also to come up with an ordinance to extend the duration of special officers administrating the civic bodies in the state.

Reacting to the delay in conducting local bodies poll, former Chennai mayor and Saidapet legislator M. Subramanian said that the state election commission behaves like a government department and has been finding tactical reasons to delay the polls. “Since last October the DMK is fighting a legal battle and is awaiting for justice in this matter”, he added.
