HYDERABAD: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief A. Revanth Reddy demanded that the government increase the insurance cover for construction workers to Rs 10 lakh for accidental death and Rs 5 lakh for injuries, citing the high-risk nature of the job.

In a media statement following a presentation by the Bhavana Nirmana Rangala Karmika Sangham at his residents, Revanth also called for more measures — ESI (employees state insurance) scheme, five per cent quota for workers’ children in private schools, scholarships for children and `5,000 monthly pensions for workers older than 60 years, as recognised by the welfare board, among others.

The Malkajgiri MP also demanded that the government appoint only workers as the chairperson, as well as members, of the Telangana Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board. He also demanded 2BHK houses for workers’ families. He assured the BNRKS of the Congress’ support.

The demands raised by the association included the provision of toilets and shelter for labourers at pick-up points or labour ‘addas’.

The government should utilise funds earned through cess for the welfare of construction workers,” said BNKRS state president D. Chandram.
