BS Yediyurappa on watch: Centre to use IAS, IPS officers to track govt

Bengaluru: Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa who wants an unfettered run and a free rein in his fourth stint as chief minister, may find he might have to compromise on his dreams. The reason? The BJP central leadership seems to be making every effort to put in place a strong system to give good administration and quieten the political environment in Karnataka.

Sources in the party said that considering his style of functioning in 2008, the party central leadership was worried about how he would run the minority government with so many pulls and pressures.

Therefore, the party central leadership seems to be preparing a list of trustworthy IAS/IPS officers who have an impeccable track record and these officials may be drafted to key posts. Two senior IAS officers have been chosen, and they will be posted directly to the Chief Minister's Office to ensure that it functions smoothly and efficiently.

Unlike in the past when caste was the main parameter for key postings, this time, the Modi-Shah style may influence Mr Yediyurappa too to go for officials who can deliver.

Moreover, sources said, these officials would keep an eagle eye on files and decisions of Mr Yediyurappa and keep sending reports to Centre. Since the cadre management power rests with the Centre, it would be open and above board, and unlike in the past, no-one will be able to favour any one firm or business.

Interestingly, if Mr Yediyurappa does manage to win the trust vote, it would be the first time that Karnataka would be ruled by the same party that rules at the centre. This in itself, has given the BJP at the centre comfort as it gives the saffron party whose track record in Karnataka was tainted by corruption charges to induct the best officers for key posts so that the BJP begins a new chapter of good governance in the southern state.
