Adoor Gopalakrishnan probe sought on Kannur killings
Kunnur: Prominent film maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan is amongst the signatories demanding a judicial probe into the political killings taking place in Kannur district for the past many years. “We demand that the government order a judicial probe into the political killings, the tendency behind and the circumstances of such killings taking place for many decades”, the signatories said in the signed statement.
Apart from Adoor, other prominent persons in the group included Bishop Alex Vadakkumthala, Prof. MGS Narayanan, Dr. M. Gangadharan, K Ajitha, J Devika, BRP Bhaskara, K.K. Kochu, Dr. P. Sanalmohan, Rafeeq Ahemad, P.N. Gopikrishnan, O. Abdullah and several others.
A judicial probe would help in facilitating a constructive intervention to pave the way for a social renaissance and democratic political expression, the statement said.
The district has witnessed hundreds of murders and thousands of violent incidents as a result of political rivalry. The situation has placed human rights and civil rights in peril, the statement said and added that so far no official probe had been conducted on the reasons or “tendency for such political attitude”. The Kannur-based Human Rights Collective is spearheading the campaign for a judicial probe into the killings.
