We left Rs 1,009 crore, says Oommen Chandy
Thiruvananthapuram: Former chief minister Oommen Chandy said it was wrong to say that treasury was empty. The treasury balance was Rs 1,009 cr when the charge was handed over on May 24. But they are just referring to one day's closing balance.
The UDF government was the first in the history of the state which had to take the burden of two pay commission recommendations in five year tenure. Chandy said he was happy that the LDF Government decided to bring out a white paper on the state's financial situation.
“It is a good decision. The people will come to know about everything. If the state’s expenditure has to be blamed then the new government will have to say categorically that it was because the power was given surplus. I don't think they will say that.”
Chandy said the RBI had permitted the government for taking Rs 4300 cr loan in the first quarter. “But we availed only Rs 2800 crore and left Rs 1500 cr since we didn't require the amount. Moreover we didn't want to create additional liability.”
