Hotels launch plastic elimination drive

Chennai: Several hotels across the country would compete with each other in giving up plastic usage through innovative solutions. The most effective initiatives will be judged for potential scaling across the company.

Indian Hotel Company Limited (IHCL’s), Taj Hotels Palaces Resorts Safaris, Vivanta, Gateway, and Ginger Hotels are participating in a plastic elimination challenge over a period of two weeks in support of Earth Hour. The hotels at IHCL will compete with each other in giving up plastic usage through innovative solutions. The most impactful and replicable initiatives will be judged for potential scaling across the company.

“In line with IHCL’s commitment to safeguard the environment, the initiative of phasing out plastic is a vital step towards developing sustainable practices. We look forward to introducing more such measures with every passing year,” Puneet Chhatwal, MD & CEO, Indian Hotels Company Limited, said.

IHCL has been participating in Earth Hour Global for many years. This year too, all its hotels, observed one-hour switch off of electricity from 8.30 to 9.30 pm on March 24, with a host of interesting guest and employee engagement activities. In addition, 30 of its luxury hotels have replaced plastic wrapped dry amenities in their rooms, such as toothbrush, shaving kit, etc. with eco-friendly substitutes.
