Supreme Court no solution for all ailments: Chief Justice of India
New Delhi: Observing that everyday frivolous Public Interest Litigations are filed on trivial issues, the Chief Justice of India J. S. Khehar on Monday said Supreme Court is not ‘Amrit Dhara’ for all ailments.
The CJI sitting with Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and Sanjay Kishan Kaul told counsel for petitioner Jaya Thakur, who sought guidelines on disposal of dead bodies, “today it is like you wake up in the morning and say chalo let me go to the Supreme Court. Arrey why don’t you approach the competent authority.”
In a lighter vein the CJI told the counsel “When I was young this Amrit Dhara, a popular herbal medicine was the medicine for all the ailments. If you have a stomach pain, amrit dhara. if you have head ache Amrit dhara. Supreme Court has become something like amrit dhara.. You wake up in the morning and come straight to Supreme Court with all your problems. Is it like let us destroy the Supreme Court? Don’t we have anything else to do?”
The petition highlighted certain shameful, shocking and inhuman incidents that took place in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, UP and other States. The PIL referred to a inhuman incident in Shahadoi district of Madhya Pradesh when the state government failed to provide vehicle to carry dead body and a man's son in law was forced to carry the body for 30 kms.
