Focus on agriculture issues in poll manifestos: SA Chinnasamy

He was here to attend a farmers livelihood conference organised by the Sangam.

Thanjavur: Political parties should take up in their election manifestoes, farmers’ issues like fixing remunerative price for agriculture produce, waiving crop loans, formation of the Cauvery Management Board and scrapping the proposed methane project in the Cauvery delta districts, said S.A.Chinnasamy, state president of the Thamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam here on Saturday.

He was here to attend a farmers livelihood conference organised by the Sangam in connection with the 92nd birthday of the well known farmers’ leader, late Narayanasamy Naidu.

Chinnasamy said that though the Supreme Court had given an order, the Central Government was yet to form the Cauvery Management Board. The Cauvery delta should be declared as a food zone.

Shale and methane gas projects should not be implemented in this zone. Gas pipelines should not be laid on cultivable lands. Prices for agriculture produce should be fixed at 50 per cent more than the cultivation expenses as per the recommendations of the Dr M.S.Swaminathan-headed National Farmers Commission.

The State and Central governments should present separate budgets for agriculture, he added. Manimozhiyan, district president of the Sangam was present on the occasion.
