PMK demands rollback of bus fare hike
Chennai: PMK founder Dr S. Ramadoss demanded a rollback of the bus fare, claiming the hike has made the people opt for alternate travel mode thus defeating the purpose of increasing the fares to enhance the revenue for the State Transport Corporations.
In a statement, here on Saturday he said the State Transport Corporations are losing around Rs 10 crore daily after the hike. About 22,000 government buses used to ferry around 2.10 crore passengers a day in the State, but following the fare hike around 25 lakh passengers have switched over to other modes of transport like railways, private buses, share cabs etc., resulting in a loss of about Rs 10 crore per day for State Transport Corporations.
Pointing out that government officials had earlier projected a revenue of about Rs 38 crore due to fare collections per day, he said now the per day fare collections is dwindled to 28 crore and hence the fare hike should be rolled back.
