BJP wins 15, Congress 9 in Leh development council elections
SRINAGAR Oct. 26: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won fifteen and Congress nine seats whereas the remaining two seats have been bagged by Independent candidates in the 30-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council,Leh (LAHDC,Leh).
The council is composed of 30 Councillors of which 26 are directly elected and 4 are nominated members.
There were as many as 94 candidates in the fray including 26 each from the BJP and Congress and 9 from Aam Admy Party besides 23 independents. The National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had chosen to stay away from the election. The voting for all the seats had begun on October 22.
The LAHDC Leh created under the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Act 1995 is an autonomous district council that administers the Leh district of Ladakh. The second district of the landlocked region- Kargil- has a separate autonomous hill development council.
The authorities said that an electorate of 89,776, including 45,025 women, exercised their franchise in 294 polling stations spread over 26 constituencies across Leh district.
