BJP gears up to give a tough fight in civic polls

Central schemes will be promoted during the BJP campaign.

Hyderabad: After losing its deposit in the Huzurnagar bypoll, the BJP is preparing itself for the upcoming municipal elections and hopes that the Gandhi Sankalp Yatra will be a good medium to reach the people.

The yatra is the party’s outreach to the people to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

While party president Amit Shah flagged off the yatra on October 2, the Mahatma’s birth anniversary, it will start on October 31 with a padayatra in the state.

The padyatra will be focused on municipalities and towns, keeping in view the upcoming elections. All the leaders and members will be covering at least 150 kilometres in a fortnight.

Former MP A.P. Jithender Reddy said, “Since 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched multiple flagship schemes that have impacted upon and improved people’s lives. We will be discussing the schemes with people and how they connect with Gandhiji’s ideals of social welfare.”

Mr Jithender Reddy said that Central government schemes like Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana which has brought LPG cylinders and good health to women and Swachh Bharat Mission which ensured that all houses had toilets will be promoted during the campaign.

Through this, the BJP aims to remind people of Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas and how the foundation of the country was laid and discuss the growth and development of the nation under Mr Modi, he said.

BJP MLC N. Rama-chander Rao, a national executive member, said clusters meetings will be held in all the municipalities. One round of tours by the party leaders had been done, he said.

“During the Gandhi Sankalp Yatra, we will explain to the people the initiatives of the Central government and expose the promises made by Chief Minister K. Chan-drasekhar Rao which have not been fulfilled.”
