THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has slammed BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj for portraying Gurmeet Ram Rahim as a "holy man" whose conviction in the rape of a minor would tarnish the image of Indian culture.
By refusing to distance themselves from Mr Maharaj's statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top BJP leaders proved themselves to be on the same page, he alleged.
"The BJP MP’s statement had come at a time when violence and mass killings which began soon after the court verdict are continuing unabated," he said.
"Sakshi Maharaj’s query whether Ram Rahim who has millions of followers or the girl who filed the complaint against him of sexual harassment was right is not only offensive to women who are victims of similar offences, but it is also a cruel joke on them."
He said the move to save the rape accused by tarnishing the image of the victim and carrying out character assassination against her, is a criminal offence and that his question whether the high court or Supreme Court would be ready to punish the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid suggested Sangh Parivar were above the law.
He said the MP had made several controversial statements in the past drawing a parallel between Godse and Gandhi and that he was also an accused in many criminal cases....
