Warangal: State pays for top ranker

K T Rama Rao hands over cheque to merit student.

WARANGAL: Empati Kushwanth found that hard work in academics does take you a long way – in his case to Delhi – after Rs 10 lakh in donations poured in from various benefactors so he could realize his dream of becoming a doctor.

Kushwanth secured the first rank in Telangana Eamcet, eighth in the AP test and 50th rank in all India Neet. He also landed a chance to study at AIIMS-New Delhi but did not have the financial means to pursue further education.

The latest bit of philanthropy was from TRS working president K.T. Rama Rao when he met the student from Jaya-shankar Bhupalpally at Pragati Bhavan on Friday and gave him a cheque for Rs 5 lakh from the CM’s Relief Fund.

Earlier, Bhupalpally MLA Gandra Venkatara-mana Reddy came to the rescue of Kushwanth and gave him `2 lakh and bought him a laptop. Singareni Collieries workers raised a sum of more than `3 lakh and gave it to Kushwanth for his higher studies.

When Mr Rama Rao learned about Kushwanth’s plight through this newspaper’s reports, he responded on Twitter and asked collector Vasam Venkatesh-warlu to find out more details about the boy. The collector met Kushwant and briefed Mr Rama Rao. The TRS leader then invited Kushwanth to Pragathi Bhavan.

When Mr Rama Rao asked Kushwanth what was the secret to his academic record, he said it was his zeal to give a better future to his mother Anitha who, after the demise of his father ten years ago, worked hard as a tailor to earn a living and educate her two sons.

Speaking to this correspondent, Kushwanth expressed gratitude to Mr Rama Rao and thanked all the people who supported him. He thanked this newspaper for carrying reports about him which led to Mr Rama Rao noticing him.

Excise minister V. Srinivas Goud and Warangal Rural ZP chairperson Gandra Jyothi were present during the meeting.
