M Karunanidhi health deteriorates

Chennai: DMK president M. Karunanidhi suffered a major setback in his health on Thursday with the Kauvery Hospital, where he had undergone a tracheotomy review procedure for replacement of tube last week, issuing a statement saying he had “fever due to urinary tract infection”.

He was being treated “with intravenous antibiotics and fluids” and was being monitored round the clock by a team of medical and nursing professions, who are providing hospital level care at his home, according to the Kauvery statement, which also “strongly advised for restriction of visitors”.

The 95-year-old DMK chief's Gopalapuram residence saw a beeline of VVIP visitors right up to late night to meet with his son M.K. Stalin and share his anguish. Prominent among them was Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and senior state ministers D. Jayakumar, Thangamani and Velumani, apart from TMC president G.K.Vasan, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan and CPI state secretary Mutharasan. They told the media persons waiting outside the house that they were told by Stalin that his father Kalaignar was only slightly indisposed with fever and would soon recover.

Minister Jayakumar said the AIADMK group saw Kalaignar and he was very much on his way to recovery. Asked if they had met him and he recognised them, he answered in affirmative.

The visit was an expression of political decency and also in reciprocation of the trip made by the DMK leaders to Apollo Hospital to enquire about the well-being of Jayalalithaa when she had been admitted there, Jayakumar said. This is the first time since the formation of the AIADMK in 1972 that anyone from that party was visiting Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram residence.
