CPM to hold party Congress in Hyderabad

The 21st party Congress was held in Vishakhapatnam in 2015.

Thiruvananthapuram: The CPM central committee on Wednesday decided to hold the 22nd party Congress in Hyderabad in April 2018.

With the party finalising the venue of the party Congress, the process of branch, local, area, district and state conferences would be set in motion soon. The 21st party Congress was held in Vishakhapatnam in 2015.

The decision to hold the party Congress in Hyderabad is seen as the party’s attempt to consolidate its position in the newly created Telengana state. Earlier, the party had held a statewide yatra across the length and breadth of the state to highlight issues concerning various sections of society.

On the forthcoming Rajya Sabha polls in West Bengal, the Central Committee was of the opinion that an acceptable independent candidate by the opposition parties might be fielded. In case it did not happen, then the West Bengal Left Front Committee would consider contesting the polls to be held on August 8.

The Central Committee had earlier rejected the proposal of the West Bengal State Committee to propose Sitaram Yechury for the third term in the Rajya Sabha.

Nationwide campaign: The Central Committee decided to organise a nationwide campaign from August 15 to 31 demanding immediate loan waivers for farmers in distress, implementation of the BJP’s electoral promise on minimum support price, 2 crore jobs as promised by Modi government and passing the Women’s Reservation Bill.

The party asked state units to launch a countrywide campaign in September against the growing attacks on Dalits and Muslims, a central law banning the gau rakshaks samitis and RSS-sponsored private armies in the name of moral policing.

The Central Committee condemned the violence unleashed allegedly by the RSS against party workers in Kerala. Since the LDF government came to power in the state, 13 party workers had been killed in such attacks, more than 200 party members injured and hospitalised, 150 houses and 50 party offices set on fire and vandalised.
