TRS-backed candidate loses council polls

Party-backed candidates trailed in a second teachers constituency and a graduates constituency.

Hyderabad: The TRS on Tuesday suffered a setback in the elections to the Legislative Council, when a party-backed candidate lost from a teachers constituency. Party-backed candidates trailed in a second teachers constituency and a graduates constituency.

In the Warangal-Nalgonda-Khammam teachers constituency, TRS-backed sitting MLC Poola Ravindar lost to TS UTF candidate A. Narsireddy who was supported by the CPM and the Congress by 2,729 votes.

In the Karimnagar-Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad graduates constituency, former Congress minister T. Jeevan Reddy was ahead of the TRS-supported Chandrasekhar Goud by 20,515 votes.

In the Karimnagar-Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad teachers constituency, PRTU candidate Raghottam Reddy was ahead of sitting MLC P. Sudhakar Reddy, who was backed by the TRS. Mr Sudhakar Reddy left the counting centre after two rounds of counting.

Mr Jeevan Reddy was defeated in the recent Assembly elections from Jagityal. In the previous elections, Legislative council Chairman Swamy Goud of the TRS had won from this seat.

Mr Chandrasekhar Goud had resigned as deputy commissioner of the transport department to contest the elections. The TRS did not field its candidate this time and supported Mr Goud.

From the Warangal-Nalgonda-Khammam teachers’ constituency, sitting TRS MLC Poola Ravindar did not get a ‘B’ form from the party, which only extended him support.

He lost to the TS UTF candidate A. Narsireddy who had the backing of the CPM and the Congress.

Mr P. Sudhakar Reddy, the sitting TRS MLC from the Karimnagar-Medak-Nizamabad teachers’ constituency, also could not get the ruling party’s ‘B’ form. The TRS extended him support.

Former MLC and Congress leader B. Mohan Reddy and PRTU leader Raghottam Reddy and others contested against Mr Sudhakar Reddy. According to latest information Mr Raghottam Reddy was ahead of his opponents.
