BJP fields handpicked seniors, takes the lead

Five women candidates are also accommodated in the first list of candidates.

Chennai: A couple of BJP seniors have migrated from their familiar turf seeking altogether a different terrain to contest this Assembly election. The BJP here hoping to make good the loss of a strong ally and also alter the poll dynamics has fielded handpicked seniors this time. Five women candidates are also accommodated in the first list of candidates.

The party, which is the first to announce its candidates for the May Assembly elections on Friday night, has fielded national secretary H. Raja hailing from Sivaganga, to the T. Nagar Assembly Constituency. This former legislator from Karaikudi had contested from the Alandur in 2006. Party’s State Vice President M. Chakravarthy, who commands considerable clout in his home constituency, has been nominated for the Tiruttani Constituency.

Another Vice President and popular debating personality on television Vanathi Srinivasan, who had contested from Mylapore, here, in 2011 Assembly elections, has opted to contest from Coimbatore South. “This is my home constituency… where I grew up. I selected the constituency to contest as my winning prospects are bright,” Ms. Vanathi who is contesting in Assembly election for the second time, told this correspondent.

Other leaders, among the first list of 54 persons, include: C. R. Nandakumar (Singanallur), Pon Vijayaraghavan, farmers’ wing president (Killiyur); Karuppu N. Muruganandham, Vice President (Pattukottai); Sivakami Paramasivam, State Vice President (Gangavalli SC); M. Meenadev, Nagercoil Municipal chairperson (Kanyakumari); and M. R. Gandhi State executive committee member (Nagercoil); besides M. R. Kanagaraj former district president (Tuticorin); K Sivasamy, former district president (Karur); S Palanisamy, State secretary (Sholavandan-SC); Nagarajan, district president (Thiruchengode); P. Gnanapandithan, State executive member (Sattur); C. Dharmaraj, former district president (Vilavancode); and M. Suseendran, Madurai rural district secretary (Madurai East).
