Kollam-Alappuzha bypass must be standalone

Mr Sudhakaran said that there were complaints due to the heavy traffic on the Kollam bypass.

Thiruvananthapuram: PWD minister G. Sudhakaran has demanded that the Kollam and Alappuzha bypasses should be considered as stand-alone schemes and made four-lane stretches.

Mr Sudhakaran said this at a meeting held to review the bypass facilities and entrusted PWD principal secretary G. Kamala Vardhana Rao to move the National Highway Authority of India for the purpose.

Mr Sudhakaran said that there were complaints due to the heavy traffic on the Kollam bypass.

A Detailed Project Report for underpasses at Kalluthazham, Ayathil and Kadavoor would be prepared.

The meeting was told that the street lights on the bridges should be installed at the earliest.

“Once the permission from the railways is received, the Alappuzha bypass should be opened to the public by May. The delay in the opening of the bypass is due to the lag in the construction of the railway overbridge,” said Mr Sudhakaran.

The state government has paid the full supervision costs to the railways. The NHAI has also been asked to provide tourist facilitation centres underneath the Alap-puzha bypass, the minister said.
