Congress dissolves PCC body in MP ahead of 2024 LS polls

Bhopal: Congress on Tuesday dissolved the party’s state executive body in Madhya Pradesh for its reconstitution ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

This was informed by AICC general secretary in-charge of Madhya Pradesh affairs Jitendra Singh at a party meeting here, a party functionary said.

Mr Singh who attended the meeting of District Congress Committee (DCC) chiefs and in-charges of district units of the party here announced the dissolution of the state executive body of the party and indicated restructuring of the body soon.

He however said that the DCC chiefs would continue to function till further orders.

The meeting was also attended by newly appointed president of state Congress Jitu Patwari, former chief minister Digvijay Singh, former Union ministers Arun Yadav and Suresh Pachouri and former Congress Legislature Party leader Dr Govind Singh.

The move comes close on the heels of the debacle of Congress in Madhya Pradesh in the just concluded Assembly elections.

The party had secured 66 out of 230 seats in the outgoing Assembly polls dashing the hopes of its return to power in the state.

“Congress workers are still in high spirits despite the party’s loss in the November Assembly elections. We are going to do well in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in Madhya Pradesh”, Mr Singh said.

Mr Patwari said that despite the poll debacle, the party has retained its vote share of 40 per cent it had secured in the 2018 Assembly elections, this time.

In 2018 Assembly elections, Congress emerged as the single largest party by bagging 114 seats, two short of a majority in the MP house.

Congress had formed the government then with the outside support of two Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) MLAs, one Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator and seven independents.

However, the Kamal Nath government barely lasted 15 months when 22 Congress MLAs resigned from the Assembly, reducing it to a minority government.

Former chief minister Kamal Nath who led the party to November 17 Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh was replaced in the post of state Congress president by Mr Jitu Patwari after the party’s drubbing in the polls.
