EC puts curbs on outside vehicles

Every road will be monitored by a paramilitary team and there will be a restriction on outside vehicles entering RK Nagar constituency.

Chennai: In a bid to prevent cash for votes in RK Nagar, door-to-door campaign from 5 pm to 9 am will be restricted and shop owners if found distributing tokens to promote freebie distribution will be arrested, chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni told reporters here on Saturday.

Every road will be monitored by a paramilitary team and there will be a restriction on outside vehicles entering RK Nagar constituency. And if any vehicle was found involved in political activities violating the model code, such vehicles will be seized by poll of-ficials, the CEO said. The CEO also said that the mo-del code has come into existence and no political graffiti and posters will be allowed in the constituency.

According to public election department sources, 16 squads of paramilitary force are to be deployed for RK Nagar and 10 teams have already begun monitoring the poll-bound constituency. The entry and exit points of the constituency are under surveillance and CCTV camera coverage will be enhanced to monitor the vehicle movements, sources said.

Meanwhile, CEO Lakhoni in a statement urged the political parties to submit the list of leaders for whom the parties desire to get an exemption. The list should be communicated to the ECI, the chief electoral officer on or before December 4.
Apart from the travel expenses incurred by the leaders whose names have been communicated to the ECI, all other expenses of the political parties relating to the campaigns for the candidate will be required to be included in the account of election expenses of the candidates.

Also, travel by a star campaigner for candidates of parties will not be exempted, he said, clarifying that the benefit will be available, only if the names of the leaders are communicated within a period of 7 days from the date of notification for the election.
