Plea to MK Stalin on NIA targeting minority community members

To a question, Mr. Jawahirullah said so far NIA has not proved any allegation regarding its actions in the State.

CHENNAI: Leaders of various Muslim outfits led by Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) leader Jawharirullah on Thursday met the DMK leader M K Stalin at the party office here and urged him to take steps to stop the misuse of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) against the Muslim minorities under the pretext of probing terrorist activities.

After the meeting Jawahirullah told reporters that the NIA was conducting frequent raids in Tamil Nadu, creating a scare and sense of insecurity among the members of the Muslim community who have been living in the state for long years and who have contributed to making Tamil Nadu a haven of peace.

He said under the name of search operations, Muslim members were being targeted and arrested and “maligned” even before any case came up for trial. They are declared “offenders” even after arrest, highly prejudicing the trial proceedings, he said, adding, they urged Mr. Stalin to take steps with the appropriate authorities to rein in the NIA activities and stop its excesses.

To a question, Mr. Jawahirullah said so far NIA has not proved any allegation regarding its actions in the State. The DMK did oppose the recent moves for additional powers for NIA in Parliament, the MMK leader added.
