CPI demands social activist's release

Mutharasan said the case had been filed with an objective of vendetta and added that the state government is filing cases on social activists.

Chennai: CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan on Tuesday demanded the release of social activist and documentary film director Dhivya Bharathi arrested in connection with a protest in 2009 seeking justice for the death of a law college student by snake bite.

He said the case had been filed with an objective of vendetta and added that the state government is filing cases on social activists. A government which could not find solution to people's issues is trying to defend itself through oppressive measures to cover up its failures, he said and warned of strong protests against such actions of the government.

Listing the arrest of May 17 leader Thirumurugan Gandhi and student Valarmathi under the Goondas Act, he said several cases had been filed against film director Gowthaman. Non-bailable cases had been filed against ten persons who protested against ONGC projects in Kathiramangalam in Thanjavur, he said.
