Mishaps up as drivers can't see the road!

In DK district, cops to remove obstructive tree branches, power poles.

Mangaluru: It was just 20 days after IPS officer Bhushan Gulabrao Borase took charge as the Superintendent of Police of Dakshina Kannada district that a ghastly accident near Mani village on June 12 killed three and injured several others. This forced him to think about effective steps to ensure road safety.

Mr Borase who found that the obstructions to a clear vision of the road were one of the reasons for accidents, has launched a unique initiative to solve the problem.

“After the Bantwal accident I thought that such incidents could be reduced if the obstructions are cleared and visibility increased. Thus we conducted a joint survey in four taluks with the forest wing, MESCOM, PWD, National Highways, and RTO department. All those places where branches, trees, grass or electricity poles obstruct the vision of drivers have been noted along with photographs,” Mr Borase told Deccan Chronicle.

“The report will shortly be submitted to the forest department asking them to clear the branches, trees or grass that obstructs the visibility of drivers. If there are any electricity poles creating hurdles, the MESCOM officials would be asked to move them back. We want the drivers to have a clear vision of the road,” he said.

He added that National Highway Authority, PWD and the RTO would be asked to take necessary steps and install signboards and Cat’s eye in accident prone areas.

“We have identified 313 spots where there is a need to install sighboards and Cat’s eye,” the police officer added. Between January and June this year, DK district police limits (excluding Mangaluru city commissionerate) witnessed 530 accidents killing 104 and injuring 759 people!
