BJP to demand educational aid for Hindu students

Pon Radhakrishnan has pursued the issue with the HRD ministry and it is reliably learnt that the Centre may accept to extend the gesture.

Chennai: The BJP which has been silent on the educational aid to the Hindu students on par with the minorities, is likely to revive the demand. According to sources, Union minister of state for road transport, highways and shipping Pon Radhakrishnan, who had launched a state-wide agitation four years ago demanding educational assistance to the poor Hindu students, is keen on helping the needy students keen on higher education.

He has pursued the issue with the HRD ministry and it is reliably learnt that the Centre may accept to extend the gesture. Mr Radhakrishnan who took up the cause of the economically weaker sections of the Hindu students, when he was the state president of the BJP had even launched a three-day fast agitation at Maraimalai Nagar on the outskirts of the city in August 2012 in support of his demand. He had even demanded the state government to pass a resolution in the Assembly ensuring education aid to poor Hindu students on par with the minority students.

Prior to this, he had organised Thamarai Yatra throughout the state to create awareness among the people on the issue and the people had spontaneously responded by joining the rallies in large numbers.
