Tamil Nadu plans to extend Amma brands

Department officials are reviewing state policies and schemes.

Chennai: The state government has planned to extend a few Amma brands of schemes like Amma purified drinking water plants, Amma canteen and Amma marriage assistance. Following good response on the existing schemes the state administrators have started working in this regard, said highly placed official sources.

With the interim budget session expected before monsoon and the local body polls likely to be held in October, the extension of AIADMK’s popular schemes will start rolling out from by the end of next month. The department officials are reviewing the state policies and the schemes. All the files including the first five that were signed by the chief minister J. Jayalalithaa after assuming office on her sixth term has come in to execution starting from free units of power to consumers, crop loan waiver, phased liquor prohibition and increase of free power up to 750 units to handloom weavers.

Now the government is focused on increasing gold allocation from four to eight grams for women beneficiaries under the Thallikku Thangam Scheme (gold for 'mangalsutra') and the orders in this regard had also reached all the district administrations.

In Chennai, the city corporation is working on Amma weekly market and in case of extended areas, a few Amma canteens will come up. Similarly the Amma drinking water units implemented in 18 places has been an instant hit and few more plants are to be set up in congested residential areas, a corporation official said adding that so far 6.47 lakh families in Chennai is estimated to have benefiting from the Amma drinking water units.
