Kamal Haasan warns MNM will approach human rights panels, TN governor, President

Chennai: Actor turned politician Kamal Haasan on Friday warned that his Makkal Neethi Maiyam would legally approach the human rights commissions, court of justice and the offices of TN governor and President of India seeking justice for those killed in the police firing that took place during the recent anti Sterlite protests.

In a statement Mr Kamal said despite widespread public outcry no representative of the government has issued any sort of statement as to answer the queries related to Thoothukudi violence. Who issued the firing order? What were the exact locations where the firing was ordered to take place and the types of weapons used were the queries awaiting answers, he said wondering why the government continues to maintain its silence. Such actions warrant immediate disciplinary action in the form of punitive measures such as suspension and resignation of not just the officers who were responsible but also the political powers that run this state, Kamal said.

The killing of civilians in the Sterlite protest is unprecedented and unheard of in both the state of Tamil Nadu and nation at large. There were events in the past across India which we have witnessed which involved an uprising and quelling of the same by the state governments. But the number of casualties which is a result of police action, like we have seen in Tuticorin is perhaps the highest in recent past, the statement said.
