Fight to get tough for Telugu parties
Hyderabad: Numbers belie the claims of Chief Ministers K. Chandrasekhar Rao and N. Chandrababu Naidu and YSRC president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy that they will play a key role in national politics.
It is difficult for either of the three parties to win all the seats unless there is a very strong wind in its favour. The TRS is likely to face a strong fight from the Congress and in AP, the YSRC will take on the TD.
Moreover the TRS is confined to only Telangana state and the TD and the YSRC are mostly confined to AP. In 2014, the TD and the YSRC won one Lok Sabha seat each from Telangana state, and the TRS 11, Congress two and MIM one. The YSRC has almost disappeared in TS, and the TD is struggling for existence.
In AP, the TD won 14 Lok Sabha seats, the YSRC eight and the BJP three seats. The TD, then with the BJP, benefited from the Modi wave. The TD has to fight the 2019 elections alone. Compared to TS and AP, states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Naidu, Bihar and Maharashtra have more Lok Sabha seats. In 2014, the Trinamul won 34 out of 42 seats in West Bengal and the AIADMK 37 out of 39 seats in Tamil Nadu.
According to speculations, the Samajwadi Party-BSP-Congress alliance is expected to win a bigger share of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh. UP may then play a key role in national politics.
