Eluru: Over 85 cases booked for poll code violation

He advised the people to alert static surveillance teams and also flying squads if they find electoral malpractices in their areas.

Eluru: West Godavari Police booked around 85 cases as part of poll code violation in the district.

West Godavari SP M. Ravi Prakash said here on Monday that they were keeping close vigil on electioneering and cautioned to book cases for violation of Model Code of Conduct if anyone intends to flout the norms issued by the Election Commission of India.

He advised the people to alert static surveillance teams and also flying squads if they find electoral malpractices in their areas.

He said that they had seized 31 kg of gold, 2,000 liquor bottles, ID liquor and black jaggery and even booked 2,200 persons under bind over cases.

Maintaining that they had identified 1,057 polling stations to be sensitive and out of them, 12 stations were located in Maoist-hit areas, the SP said that they had strengthened security in such polling stations and added that paramilitary personnel were carrying out march-past in villages to instil confidence among the people to exercise their franchise freely in the villages in the district.

He advised the contestants, political leaders and their followers to strictly comply with the norms of ECI and asked them to obtain prior permission from the DSP concerned to take out a rally and even to use the public address system.

He said that the number of vehicles, in the convoy of contestants, during the electioneering would be restricted as per norms and cautioned that even if any party supporters try to sport party flags on their vehicles in an unauthorised way, the election expenditure observers would put such expenditure in the account of the contestant concerned. He asked the political parties not to give away cash, saris and sports equipment to the voters, to influence them in their favour.

Earlier, the SP attended to Grievance Cell and accepted complaints from the people. A woman from Eluru complained to the SP that her daughter-in-law was troubling her and sought action against her.

Some people from Devarapalli complained to the SP stating that some miscreants were duping the youth with a promise to provide employment and were collecting money from them and sought stern action against such people.

Speaking on the occasion, the SP said that a good number of people were complaining about property disputes, harassment from in-laws and civil issues and instructed the police officers concerned to book cases, take up inquiry and submit report.
