BJP corporators draw flak over delay in civic projects

Compared to their counterparts from TRS and MIM, BJP corporators are lagging behind when it comes to taking up developmental works

HYDERABAD: BJP corporators are facing the heat as they are under tremendous pressure from people over delay in civic works in their respective divisions under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

Compared to their counterparts from TRS and MIM, BJP corporators are lagging
behind when it comes to taking up developmental works. Delays in convening the general body meeting of GHMC or in allocation of funds have come as hurdles for the last few months. As a result, the corporators are facing criticism from people, who are blaming them for not taking up new works.

BJP represents 47 of 150 wards. Barring three, all others are first-time corporators. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, senior BJP corporator from ward no. 71, Devara Karunakar said that TRS and MIM corporators are getting
funds from their MLAs in Greater Hyderabad.

TRS government is intentionally not releasing funds to BJP corporators, he said.
By centralising powers, municipal minister K.T. Rama Rao has destroyed the spirit of local body representatives, he said. BJP will not be a silent spectator to such discrimination and will fight this, he said. Mylardevpally BJP corporator T.
Srinivas Reddy alleged that the state government diverted 13, 14 and 15 state finance commission funds released by the centre. Earlier, GHMC provided loans to RTC and now it is forced to take loans of Rs 4,500 crore, he said.
The TRS government’s inept administration has driven the civic body into a debt-trap. It has been paying Rs 34 crore interest every month, he said.

Central unit leaders of BJP Hyderabad demanded a general body meeting of GHMC immediately. They also demanded special funds for corporators to take up civic works in their wards.

Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi should take the initiative to protect the interests of corporators cutting across party lines, they said.
