Chennai: State cooperation minister Sellur K. Raju has urged the people to shun usurers and to approach the cooperative banks for their loan requirement.
Stating that money lending at usurious interest rates should be abolished and appropriate action taken on those who were involved in this “evil” practice, Mr. Sellur Raju said the people who were in need of financial assistance could seek the help of the state-owned cooperative banks. “Those who can afford would no doubt approach the nationalised banks but the needy should not hesitate to seek and obtain the assistance of the cooperative banks which has many lending schemes like home loans, mortgage loans This will help them to liberate the-mselves from the clutches of usurers,” Raju said.
Meanwhile, Union minister of state for finance and shipping Pon Radhakrishnan demanded action against usurers responsible for the death of a family of four. Expressing shock over the death of a man who set his wife and two daughters ablaze before immolating himself in Tirunelveli Collectorate on Monday, Mr Radhakrishnan said, “state should take stringent action on those responsible for their deaths.”
