VCK likely to take part in DMK meet
Chennai: The crucial executive committee of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, a constituent of People’s Welfare Front, on Monday favoured party’s participation in the all-party meeting called by DMK on the Cauvery issue on October 25 and authorised its party chief Thol. Thirumavalavan to take a final call after consulting MDMK and Left parties.
After the party's executive committee adopted a resolution on Monday afternoon, Mr Thirumavalavan along with his party senior leaders called on CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan and CPI (M) state secretary G. Ramakrishnan separately to convince them to reconsider the PWF's decision to boycott.
Sources said that Left parties were firm on the decision to not attend the DMK-convened all party meeting citing its timing as the nomination filing for the November 19 elections to three Assembly seat begins on October 26.
Participating in the meeting at this juncture would send out a wrong signal to the general public, a senior Left leader said, adding that it would be better to keep away from it.
Mr Thirumavalavan was expected to declare his party's stand after meeting MDMK general secretary Vaiko at his residence on Monday night. Mr Thirumavalavan said that his party don't want to link Cauvery issue with the electoral alliances, as it is an issue of public importance.
“All party meeting was convened to discuss an important issue concerning livelihood of a large section of people. There is a need to showcase our unity. All parties including PWF constituents and DMK should come forward to hold “Cauvery Rights Rally” in Chennai as decided in the all party meeting convened by the farmers association on October 6,” he told reporters here.He also denied any rift in the PWF.
Mr Vaiko, who had announced the PWF's decision to boycott, continued his barb against the DMK on Monday saying that the party failed to even take steps to notify the Cauvery tribunal's final order issued in 2007 in the gazette when it was in power in both the state and Centre.
“The Centre was forced to notify in the gazette after the Supreme Court's ultimatum in the case filed by the previous AIADMK government. Now they are convening an all party meeting seeking for formation of the Cauvery management board,” he told reporters at the airport. When asked about VCK’s stand, he abruptly ended the press briefing and walked away saying he don't know.
When asked whether the PWF would disintegrate if the VCK decides to participate in the meeting, a senior VCK leader said that it would not affect the PWF.
