Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Satyabrata Sahoo said here on Tuesday that electronic voting machines (EVM) were likely to be used for the forthcoming local body elections in the state and they would be supplied by the Election Commission of India.
The State Election Commission (SEC) which is responsible for holding the panchayat elections, had made a request for supply of EVMs for conducting the local body polls this time all over the state, Sahoo told reporters.
The SEC’s request was conveyed to the Election Commission of India which has agreed to supply the needed EVMs for the polls, Sahoo said, adding, the number of EVMs needed for every district would be ascertained from the collectors. That figure would be communicated to the EC and accordingly, the poll panel will dispatch the EVMs to the state, he said.
The civic body polls are expected to take place in November this year. There was partial use of EVMs n polls to local bodies last time, it may be recalled.
As regards the bypolls to Vikravandi and Nanguneri, Sahoo said the model code of conduct was being implemented strictly and so far no untoward incident has been reported. The police and para-military forces needed for the by-polls were being ascertained, the CEO added.
